Five years ago I left my full-time job as a full-stack software engineer to freelance. I didn't know much about how to find clients, negotiate contracts, or structure my time, so I spent the next year learning everything there is to know about consulting. After finding my first few clients, I built a team of engineers + designers and created a unique brand. We started finding $100k+ contracts and had 6 major software development builds going in parallel. My role evolved from "freelance software engineer" to "technical product manager", and sometimes "fractional CTO".
I'm passionate about both running a creative agency and doing the creative work itself. As a business owner, I've had to make the difficult decision to let go of the creative work at times and delegate it to my team - and this art of delegation is the hardest part of talented creatives like you and me, because we have a natural love for the craft.

But I suspect that as an experienced technologist yourself, it's helping with the *logistics* of consulting or starting an agency that will be the most valuable.
